What is a dental plan?
A dental plan (also called a dental membership or dental capitation plan) is an agreement with a private dentist where you pay a fixed monthly fee in exchange for routine dental care. It's not insurance — it's a pre-payment for agreed treatments.
Most plans cover the basics: check-ups, hygienist cleans, and X-rays. More comprehensive plans also cover fillings and other restorative work. You join through a specific dental practice, and your fee is set by that dentist based on your dental health.
Important: Dental plans are private arrangements — not connected to NHS dental treatment. If you're eligible for free NHS treatment (under 18, pregnant, recently given birth, or on certain benefits), you may not need a plan at all. See NHS band charges →

Frequently asked questions
- Is a dental plan worth it?
- A dental plan is worth it if you attend regular check-ups and hygienist appointments — the plan typically covers those for less than paying individually. It also gives predictable monthly costs rather than large unexpected bills. It makes less sense if you rarely visit the dentist or are entitled to free NHS treatment.
- What is the difference between Denplan and NHS?
- NHS dental treatment uses fixed Band charges (Band 1 £26.80, Band 2 £73.50, Band 3 £319.10 in England). Denplan is a private dental plan where you pay a monthly fee to your dentist, covering agreed treatments. Denplan is private dentistry with a payment plan — not an NHS alternative.
- Can I join a dental plan without being registered at a practice?
- You join a dental plan through a specific practice, not centrally. Find a dentist who offers the plan first, then enrol through them. The monthly cost varies by dentist and the treatment level included.
- Does a dental plan cover emergencies?
- Most plans include some emergency cover — either through your own practice or a 24-hour helpline. Denplan's Essentials and higher plans include worldwide emergency dental cover. Always check the policy details before enrolling.
